Have you ever thought about what the hairdressers do with the dull clipper blades? Do they throw them off? I also had the same inquisitiveness when I came to know about the sharpening rods for sharpening knives which I have mentioned in my previous article.
So, this time during my visit to the hairdresser I asked him about what he does with the dull clipper blades. Then he shared his insights on the techniques of sharpening and maintaining dull clipper blades.
Dull blades not only give mediocre haircuts but can also be uncomfortable and dangerous. Don’t put up with inadequate results or waste money on pricey blade replacements.
In this article, I have amalgamated my hairdresser’s insight with his experience and my research about sharpening and maintaining clipper blades.
What Causes Clipper Blades to Lose Sharpness?
Clipper blades can lose sharpness or become dull due to the following reasons:
- Using them a lot wears them down over time.
- Hair and dirt build-up makes them less sharp.
- Forgetting to clean and oil them enough makes them dull.
- Storing them wrong, like in damp or dusty places, can also dull them.
Don’t worry if your clipper blades are dull. With some time, effort, and the proper techniques, you can sharpen them to be like new again.
Types of Sharpening Tools
When it’s time to sharpen clipper blades, you’ve got a variety of tools to choose from. Each tool has a unique way of getting the job done.
- Sharpening Stones
Sharpening stones are traditional tools that come in different roughness levels. Sharpening stones are good for making dull clipper blades sharp again.
Compared to other sharpening methods, they are often more affordable and have a long lifespan. You also have complete control over the sharpening process.
- Sharpening Machines
Sharpening machines or electric sharpeners are made to sharpen clipper blades accurately. Automated sharpening reduces the time and effort required compared to manual methods like sharpening stones. It is ideal for professionals or those who demand high-quality sharpening.
- Honing Stones
Honing stones usually have a finer grit compared to sharpening stones. They’re primarily used to refine and upkeep the sharpness of a blade’s edge.
Please note:
If you’re sharpening ceramic clipper blades, opt for a sharpening stone instead of a standard honing stone.
Read the label carefully to ensure you select the appropriate tool for sharpening your clipper blade.
How to Sharpen Clipper Blades with Top 3 Techniques
Before you start sharpening your clipper blades, make sure to:
- Take off the blades: Check your clipper’s manual for instructions on how to remove them.
- Clean the blades: Use a soft cloth or brush to get rid of any dirt, debris, and hair. Tweezers can help with any stuck hair.
After the basic setup, let’s learn how to sharpen your clipper blades using three different tools.
Technique #1: Using Sharpening Stones
Here are the steps to follow:
- Position the blades: Place the blades in a stable position for easy access to both sides. You can hold them by hand or secure them with a clamp or vise.
- Begin sharpening: Hold the sharpening stone at a slight angle against the blade and gently move it back and forth. Apply light pressure and go slowly to avoid damaging the blade.
- Test sharpness: After sharpening one side, test its sharpness by running your finger along the edge. If it feels sharp and smooth, proceed to the other side. If it feels dull, keep sharpening until it’s sharp.
- Repeat the process: Once both sides are sharp, repeat the steps for the other blade.
Sharpening clipper blades with a sharpening stone requires patience and attention to detail to achieve optimal results.
Technique #2: Using Sharpening Machines
Here are the steps to follow:
- Set up the machine: Read the sharpening machine’s manual for setup instructions. Put the machine on a stable, flat surface so it doesn’t move while you use it. Plug it in or make sure it has enough battery power.
- Insert the blade into the machine: For proper sharpening, fit the clipper blade correctly in the holder to avoid wobbling. Adjust the sharpening angle and pressure according to the blade type. Make sure the blade is tightly secured to prevent uneven sharpening.
- Begin sharpening: Please turn on the machine and let it run its automatic sharpening cycle. Watch to make sure the machine is working correctly, and the blade is being sharpened evenly. Some machines have a timer or indicator to show when they’re done.
- Test the sharpness: Test the blade’s sharpness by gently running your finger along the edge (taking care not to cut yourself) or using it on a small section of hair or fur. If the blade is not sharp enough, run it through another cycle or adjust the settings and sharpen again. Once satisfied with the sharpness, reassemble the clipper and ensure everything is securely in place before using it.
Technique #3: Using Honing Stone
Here are the steps to follow:
- Prepare the honing stone: For good sharpening results, make sure the stone has a grit surface of about 4000. Put the stone on a steady surface and secure it if needed to avoid any movement while sharpening.
- Angle the blade: Keep the clipper blade at a 30–45º angle against the honing stone’s surface. Maintain this angle consistently while sharpening to achieve a uniform edge.
- Sharpen the blade: Apply gentle pressure as you slide the blade forward across the stone in one direction. Avoid dragging the blade backward to prevent edge damage. Repeat this movement five to ten times or until the blade looks shiny and uniformly sharpened.
- Repeat for the other edge: Turn the blade over and repeat the sharpening process for the other edge. Ensure the same angle and pressure are applied to achieve consistent sharpening on both sides.
Maintenance Tips
To extend the clipper blade lifespan, follow these maintenance tips:
- Clean after each use to remove debris.
- Apply oil to prevent rust and ensure smooth operation.
- Regularly check alignment and tension.
- Store in a clean, dry place or case.
